3,000 new jobs promised for Guyana’s Region Six as govt. continues ‘aggressive’ employment push

Residents can earn up to GYD$40,000 per month but only one person per household can apply for new job 

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The government has just one-upped itself in creating new job opportunities for its citizens, announcing 3,000 new part-time jobs will be made available for residents of Region Six just over a week after it unveiled an initiative to create 800 part-time jobs for residents of Region 10.

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo made the revelation today during a two-day outreach in the area, which encompasses East Berbice-Corentyne.

According to a government statement, “Residents of Region Six will soon benefit from 3,000 part-time government jobs…

“The vice president said the government would begin rolling out the initiative in the next three weeks in the region. Dr. Jagdeo believes the move will provide added financial aid to residents.”

In recent months, the Guyanese government has been “aggressively pushing” to secure employment for its citizens as part of its plan to “provide 50,000 jobs over a five-year period, as was promised in its manifesto”.

Dozens of Guyanese people are expected to benefit from the new employment opportunities in the weeks ahead, which could augur well as the country pursues steady economic growth after the setbacks endured as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New jobs to combat rising cost of living 

But one of the primary purposes of the rollout of these new jobs is to benefit residents and help them afford a comfortable living, the government emphasized.

This is especially the case in Region Six, which has a large population of 142,839 and which the government has described as “an important rice-producing, cattle-rearing and sugarcane-producing area”.

Region Six was also reportedly “hard-hit” by job losses in recent years as thousands of workers were laid off after several Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) estates were shut down.

As such, the Guyanese government said, “This is part of a strategic approach to provide long-term support to citizens amid rising cost of living due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other external factors.”

According to Vice President Jagdeo, residents will be able to earn up to GYD$40,000 monthly and work three times per week.

But only one individual per household will be hired for the new jobs, he noted.

Jagdeo highlighted, however, the “provision of the part-time jobs is another step by the PPP/C government to supplement the income of the citizens”.
