PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO — The American Caribbean Maritime Foundation has launched a new platform to connect new graduates in the maritime industry with prospective job opportunities in the blue economy.

The jobs platform, called the Caribbean Maritime Career Exchange (CAREX), is “exclusively for graduands of Caribbean Maritime University, LJM Maritime Academy, University of Trinidad and Tobago and MatPal Marine”, according to the ACMF organization.

“ACMF-CAREX is the first-of-its-kind jobs board exclusively for the Caribbean,” an ACMF statement noted.

The American Caribbean Maritime Foundation has launched the Caribbean Maritime Career Exchange (CAREX) jobs platform for young graduates.

“The site is only accessible to job seekers/candidates in the region. Job seekers living outside of the Caribbean are not able to register on the site.

“However, prospective employers anywhere in the world can register and will have full access to the qualified workers profiled on the site who are looking for job opportunities.

“The site posts seafaring and land-based jobs and covers the gamut of opportunities, including but not limited to deck cadets, engineers, logisticians, port managers, supply chain managers, cybersecurity specialists and robotics engineers, to name a few.”

ACMF President Dr. Geneive Brown Metzger heralded the platform’s launch as a critical step for the organization.

“After making an investment in educating young people,” she said, “helping to place them in jobs was the logical next step.

“Although the maritime space is global, accessing information about job opportunities in the region and overseas can be a challenge.”

Metzger added, “We hope the jobs board will be a game-changer in the job search process.”

    Capitalizing on the maritime industry

The launch of ACMF’S CAREX jobs platform comes as economic diversification has become a hot-button topic in the region, with diverse experts urging Caribbean nations to capitalize on maritime jobs and the blue economy.

ACMF has vouched for the training of Caribbean nationals in a wide range of fields, with officials suggesting they are quite qualified to fill a projected shortfall of workers in the maritime industry by 2026.

Royal Caribbean International has committed to hiring cadets in partnership with the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation’s CAREX jobs platform for new graduates.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean International has partnered with the institution and, according to RCI CEO Michael Bayley, the cruise line has “committed to hiring cadets and help guide them so they can become captains on Royal’s ships”.

ACMF noted, “The 1.89 million people currently employed at sea in the maritime industry is only half of the number of employees in the field.

“Shore-based workers and professionals, such as engineers, logisticians, port managers, truckers, hospitality workers, supply chain managers and customs clerks double that number.”
