Caribbean nations encouraged to adopt National Career Service programmes to stimulate local growth

First programme launched in Haiti last year saw 200 nationals become employed

Global Startup Ecosystem (GSE) CEO Christine Ntim is issuing a call for all Caribbean nations to implement National Career Service programmes to secure job opportunities and career development especially for the region’s youth.

“I’m bold to say that I believe in the National Career Service and I’m bold to say that I’ve already initiated a National Career Service Programme in my hometown of Haiti,” Ntim shared during the Caribbean Future Summit 2021.

“Yes, I’m not just speaking just in theoretical nature; we’ve already launched Haiti’s first National Career Service Programme last year with a Haiti Digital Accelerator, where we employed and brought together 200 local Haitian citizens [and] got them to be accelerated with digital skills — because we do believe that we need to rescale our young people for the skill set needs of today…

“These 200 nationals were also able to get a virtual internship with our partner organizations at that program, and many of them were hired immediately with remote work jobs.”

    National Career Service focus

Global Startup Ecosystem (GSE) CEO Christine Ntim.

Ntim firmly asserted, “I believe that there should be a National Career Service programme in every single country across the Caribbean, where the private sector could start looking into the talent because, as many of you are aware, when it comes to young people finding jobs, a lot of times it’s who you know [but] we need to live in an age where it’s talent that gives you opportunity…”

Such programmes geared at securing gainful employment for Caribbean youth must center around tapping into the region’s talents and inspiring them to “build local, scale their careers locally and not believe that the only way that they can accelerate their careers, accelerate their future growth, is outside of the Caribbean”.

Additionally, GSE has partnered with the IDB Lab to launch National Career Service Digital Career-Accelerated Programmes to “upscale talent” in the tourism sector in Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and the Dominican Republic.

“This is an opportunity that I will formally say and declare to any government, to any corporate sector, to any local ecosystem builder who wants to join this movement with us, I call to action to join us on this initiative of launching a National Career Service initiative across the region for this entire decade into 2030 and redefine where we place our young talent in the region to accelerate growth within the Caribbean,” Ntim said.
