Jamaica statistics organization seeking new director of corporate services

Crucial role will report directly to director general and be responsible for overseeing a multiplicity of areas 

KINGSTON, JAMAICA — The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is calling for highly skilled, competent and self-motivated individuals with expertise in a range of corporate areas to apply for the prestigious position of director of corporate services.

According to STATIN, “Reporting to the director general, the director of corporate services has overall responsibility for the management of the Corporate Services Division, which delivers a full range of support services, including human resource management, administrative/general services, finance and accounting, communication & marketing and procurement, to enable the effective and efficient operation of the institute.”

Developing and implementing various programmes; managing division budgets; coordinating audits; establishing and maintaining filing systems; providing guidance and oversight; recommending employment of staff, acting appointments and promotions; overseeing disciplinary actions; and approving leave/time off and expenditure up to $250,000 are just some of the duties STATIN’s corporate services director will be expected to competently carry out, in addition to “any other duties or responsibilities that may be deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the division”.

The position is also one that demands dedication, as it will require island-wide and possibly regional and international travel; attendance at certain House of Assembly sittings; public representation on STATIN’s behalf; extended work hours that may spill into the weekend as needed to meet deadlines; and “extended periods of sustained concentration”, with due cause considering the crucial role the right individual will play.

 

Who is right for the role of corporate services director?

The right candidate for director of corporate services at STATIN must have demonstrated managerial competencies, including outstanding communication, leadership, teamwork and people management skills; in addition to excellent customer service and strategic planning.

    Applicants are also required to have extensive knowledge of STATIN’s programmes, products and services; the functions and operations of the Corporate Services Division, including organizational relationships; financial management; human capital management; and relevant legislation/regulations/policies concerning the public sector as well as STATIN itself.

    Computer proficiency and general knowledge of the UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and IMF Data Dissemination Standards, such as the General Data Dissemination System and the Special Data Dissemination System, are also key for the corporate services director role.

    A graduate degree in Business Administration/Public Administration with HR component, Psychology, Organizational Development or another relevant field is considered a “minimum requirement”, along with 10 years’ experience in the organizational development field — at least three years of which should be managerial-level experience.
