PM Holness emphasizes need for young men to join the workforce
KINGSTON, JAMAICA — With more young Jamaican men being encouraged to pursue gainful employment, Caribbean Employment Services Inc. CEO Joseph Boll is reminding jobseekers across the region how easy and convenient it is to find and apply for jobs online.
PM Holness wants more young men working instead of living a life of crime.
Jamaica has been on a steady recovery from the pandemic, with unemployment continuously trending down and tourism trending upwards.
At a recent speaking engagement, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted that the country will need more young workers to keep up with its economic growth trajectory.
In particular, he said he would like to see more young Jamaican men step up to become employed rather than to be idle “on the streets.”
It is not the first time the nation’s leaders have made such a call, given the country’s generally high crime rate — with most crimes being perpetuated by young men.
Holness said, “We want to get them employed. We need them in the labour force, because that is what is going to expand the growth of the economy…
“We need you in the workforce in order to ensure that our economy can continue to grow.
“If businesses want to expand but can’t find the labour force to do it, it will impact their investment decisions.”
He pledged that his government is “working on that” issue through programmes like the HEART/NSTA Trust and other initiatives.
Youth encouraged to find Caribbean jobs online
In the meantime, Joseph Boll, Caribbean Employment Services Inc. CEO, reminded jobseekers that they don’t have to wait for their respective governments to find employment for them.
Young people can find jobs in Jamaica or anywhere in the Caribbean or world online.
“It’s easy to find a job that interests you and fits your skillset on our website,” he said.
“Instead of spending a lot of time on social media, it only takes a few minutes to search for jobs — both in your area, country and even remote or overseas opportunities that are available to anyone in the Caribbean.
Boll also noted that jobseekers can sign up for email notifications, so new jobs in their field of interest can be sent to them directly.
This, he said, makes it very convenient for Caribbean youth — or any Caribbean jobseeker — to apply for jobs without having to hunt for jobs the long, tedious way they had to in the past.
“Creating an account and applying for jobs is free,” Boll said. “You literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You don’t need to wait for someone in the government; you can take your future into your own hands and find a job in minutes right now.”
